Forestry bucket trucks. Decide how high you need to be to do most of your work. Generally the higher you go the more the unit will cost. If most of trees are below 50ft, a 55ft working height should be good. A single bucket is most common. Decide whether or not you want a dump bed included. Make sure that the truck has a flatbed with some storage boxes. You don’t need a utility bed.
Utility or line bucket trucks. Decide how high you need to be to do most of your work. Generally the higher you go the more the unit will cost. Make sure that the truck has a utility bed, you’ll need all the storage space you can get. Decide if you need single bucket, 2-single buckets or a 2-man tub. An insulated boom is most commonly used. You might need a material handler or an over-center boom.
Sign trucks. Sign trucks come in many varieties., Most common have a 2-man metal basket with varying heights, crane with lifting capacity up to 8000lbs, some have welders. Some sign companies prefer the ladder trucks while other companies like the boom type with a bucket attached on the end.

How to decide whether to buy a NEW versus USED bucket truck.
Money matters, a new truck comes with a guarantee and peace of mind, although the bucket and boom usually only come with a 1 year warranty. You do lose $$ on the initial depreciation.
With a quality used truck you can get much more bang for your buck. Often you can find a quality slightly (less than 5 years old) for 50% of the new price.
How to decide whether to rent or buy your bucket truck.
If you need a truck for 30 days or less per year, then it probably makes financial sense to rent. The peace of mind of having the equipment available at a moments notice gives the business man a big advantage over his competitor who rents.
